MVP mourns death of Ateneo players Baterbonia, Adili

Businessman and longtime Ateneo sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan expressed his condolences following the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili in a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Aurora.

In a post on X on Tuesday night, Pangilinan extended his sympathies to the families of the two student-athletes and joined the Ateneo community in mourning their loss.

“My most profound sympathy to the families of Rene and Divine; my thoughts and prayers are with them. I join the Ateneo community in grief over their loss,” Pangilinan wrote.

He also paid tribute to the two young athletes, describing them as promising individuals whose lives ended too soon.

“Rene and Divine were young men of promise whose presence made the world brighter. That light has gone too soon; our hearts are heavy with regret and sorrow,” he said in a separate post.

Pangilinan added that the memory of Baterbonia and Adili would continue to live on through those whose lives they touched.

“Their memory will be carried forward by those who knew them; they will have our eternal respect and love,” he wrote.

Baterbonia and Adili, members of the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team, died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Initial findings by police indicated that the two players were swept by a strong current into deeper waters while swimming.

Their deaths have prompted an outpouring of grief from the Philippine sports community, with athletes, coaches, sports officials, and various organizations offering condolences and support to their families and the Ateneo community.
