LOOK: MNLF Members Set to Fight for the Government in Marawi Crisis

President Rodrigo Duterte met with leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to discuss possible help for the civilians trapped by the battle in Marawi.

The meeting happened on May 29 in Davao wherein leaders of the MILF were present, particularly, MILF chairman Alhaj Murad Ebrahim, and MILF First Vice Chairman, Ghazali Jaafar.

According to the joint communications team of the Philippine government and the MILF, Ebrahim "welcomed the idea of PRRD for the MILF forces to help in extending necessary humanitarian assistance to civilians which are still trapped in areas of Marawi where sporadic fighting still happen."

"The peace mechanisms such as the Coordinating Committees on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCHs) of both the GHP (Government of the Philippines) and the MILF would be utilized for planning and implementing the ways on how to immediately and safely extend humanitarian assistance," the joint communications team added.

Since Tuesday of last week when the Maute Group started attacking Marawi City, a lot of civilians have been affected by the terrorism. Building have been burnt by the terrorists, civilians have been kidnapped, airstrikes have been executed by the military, and a number of citizens have been killed throughout the turn of events.

President Rodrigo Duterte also offered more slots for Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) fighters who wish to side and fight for the government in the fighting group against the terrorists in Marawi.

Duterte had alreaady announced earlier that he accepted the offer given by Nur Musari, founder and leader of the MNLF, to provide MNLF fighter to help the government fight against criminals and terrorist groups in Mindanao.



President Duterte assured the public that the declaration of martial law will not be used against the MILF and with other groups which forward peace negotiations. He added that martial law declaration will address the issue of "rebellion" by the Maute Group and other ISIS-linked terrorist groups.

The meeting also tackled about peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the MILF to initiate a conflict-free Mindanao.

“The President also discussed relevant matters on the drafting of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and urged the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) to fast track the drafting of the BBL,” said Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Año, the appointed martial law administrator.

MILF First Vice Chairman Ghazali Jaafar "expressed confidence" that the drafting of the BBL would be finished by June.

Other personalities present at the meeting were BIAF chief of staff Sammy Al-Mansour, Peace Implementing Panel Chair Mohagher Iqbal, Supreme Shari’ah Court head Ustadz Khalifa Nando and AHJAG Chair Abdul Dataya, and GPH Peace Panel Chairman Irene Santiago

June 17 of last year, Duterte also met with MILF and MNLF leaders to negotiate ending the long years of conflict between the government of the Philippines and the terrorist groups in Mindanao.

Last year's meeting was referred to as a "meeting of a brother to a brother" as the parties discussed forwarding the idea of peaceful Mindanao.
