Villar stresses value of wetland park as bird sanctuary

Sen. Cynthia Villar stressed anew the importance of wetlands in providing wildlife habitats, including as sanctuary of migratory birds.

On the occasion of the World Migratory Bird Day, Villar said the Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park (LPWP) located South of Manila Bay, has served as resting and feeding grounds for migratory birds coming from Japan, China, and Siberia.

“Wetlands have a unique characteristic and serve a lot of functions that is why these areas are protected and preserved,” Villar said.

Villar, chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, authored Republic Act 11038 or the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas Act or E-NIPAS Act, which lists the Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park as a protected area.

The park is a 175- hectare nature reserve providing sanctuary to 82 species of wild bird including Philippine ducks, Chinese egret, and the Black-winged stilts.

It has 36 hectares of mangrove forest, the thickest and most diverse among the remaining mangrove areas in Manila Bay. There are at present 11 mangrove species growing in the area. It is the spawning ground of fishes in Manila Bay supporting the livelihood of 300,000 fisherfolk in Manila Bay.

The Ramsar Convention recognizes Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park’s global importance to biodiversity that it declared the park as a Wetland of International Importance along with six other sites in the Philippines, namely; 1.the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan; 2. the Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park in Sulu; 3. the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur; 4. the Naujan Lake National Park in Oriental Mindoro; 5. the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary in Cebu; and 6. the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area in Negros Occidental.

Villar also underscored the urgency of preserving the Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park in the face of plans to reclaim Manila Bay.

“There are reclamation projects that plan to build on the buffer zones of the park. We are vigorously opposing this because buffer zones should not be touched in order to preserve the landscape where the wetland now thrives,” Villar said.

The senator has expressed her opposition to the plan of Bacoor and Paranaque local governments to reclaim 320 hectares and 287 hectares, respectively, in portions of Manila Bay which are delineated as buffer zones of Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park.

The World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated twice this year—May 9 and October 10. With the theme “Birds Connect Our World,” this year’s celebration aims to highlight the importance of conserving and restoring the ecological connectivity and integrity of ecosystems that support the natural movements of migratory birds. ###

Villar cites growing number of volunteers, partners in Manila Bay clean up drive

Senator Cynthia Villar said the growing number of volunteers and partner organizations that take part in the clean-up and mangrove planting activities should be credited for the strides made in the Manila Bay rehabilitation campaign.

Villar, chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, made this statement as the International Day of Coastal Cleanup was observed over the weekend.

Villar said almost 12 years after the issuance of the Supreme Court mandamus compelling government agencies and local government units to clean up and rehabilitate Manila Bay, “we still have a long way to go before we restore the bay to its pristine condition.”

“Natutuwa ako dahil mas marami na tayo ngayong volunteers and partners sa ating clean up and mangrove planting activities in Manila Bay. Marami sa kanila ang hindi tumitigil sa paglilinis kahit may pandemya,” Villar said.

Five years ago, Villar started a project in Baseco Compound. Together with the Department of Health, she initiated a project that will build toilet facilities for the residents and address the problem of open defecation in the area.

She also built livelihood projects such as mangrove planting, urban garden, recycling, and aquaculture. Baseco residents are now benefitting from these projects as a source of food or as a source of additional income.

The lady senator also continues to be at the forefront of the fight against Manila Bay reclamation. The Las Pinas-Paranaque Wetland Park, a 175-hectare critical area situated south of Manila Bay, is a Wetland of International Importance that was accorded protection against the threat of reclamation through the Villar-authored Republic Act 11038 or the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act.

Also in a bid to increase awareness on the importance of this wetland as a sanctuary of migratory birds and haven of flora and fauna, Villar helped build facilities in the area such as a wetland center, visitor’s center, bird hides, boardwalk, and view towers, for the convenience of people looking to enjoy the wonders of this park.

Umaasa ako na kahit na malayo pa tayo sa end-goal, we continue to inspire others to help us win the Battle for Manila Bay,” she added.

Out Here On My Own: Mariah Carey versus Irene Cara

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey blasted the music scene with a remake of a popular 1980 ballad “Out Here On My Own” which she previewed on Twitter.

The song was originally done by Irene Cara for the musical “Fame.”

It peaked at No. 19 on Billboard US Charts. In 1981, Cara performed the song at the Oscars where it was nominated for Best Original Song.

In her tweet, Carey called the song the soundtrack of her life.

“The fact that I believed I could become a successful artist is one of my greatest strengths. Around the same time, my mother entered me in a talent competition in the city, and I sang one of my favorite songs, ‘Out Here on My Own,” by Irene Cara. I felt ‘Out Here on My Own’ described my entire life, and I loved singing that way — singing to reveal a piece of my soul. And I won doing it. At that age. I lived for the movie Fame, and Irene Cara was everything to me,” Carey said.

Dr. Mario Guiang Jr. educates public on dental health via TikTok

There are many ways to educate the public on dental health. For celebrity dentist Dr. Mario Guiang Jr., TikTok is among them.

So far, Guiang has already earned 4.5 million likes for his TikTok videos where he dances and lip-syncs, among others.

“When I introduced the TikTok video where I wore personal protective equipment (PPE), I got 1.3 million views,” he proudly related.

Guiang said people were apprehensive about going to the dentists because of the virus.

“So in order to remove their anxiety, dinaan ko ang presentation sa Tik-Tok. And it’s effective. In the comments section, people started to ask about our precautionary measures in the clinic against COVID -19. Kahit mga Asian neighbors natin nagtanong na rin sa akin.”

The multi-awarded doctor went full blast performing in the video-sharing social networking platform at the height of the pandemic.

“Ang laki ng tulong ng social media sa ating during the lockdown. When I showed them (via TikTok) how I fight off COVID-19, parang naisip nila, puwede naman pala.”

“I started to feel the effect of COVID-19 in my profession when my patients started to cancel their appointments. That’s in February. We were closed in March and April. Doon ko naisip mag-TikTok,” he said.

When his clinic in Tarlac was closed, his patients resorted to online consultation, he said.

“Many of them have aching teeth. For severe cases, I told them to go to the hospitals. Pero natatakot naman silang pumunta sa mga hospital dahil nga sa COVID so hindi ko na alam ano na ang ginawa nila.”

With the prices of medical supplies around the world having soared, Guiang said that dentists in the country have no choice but to increase their dental services times three.

“Hindi kami nagtaas dahil gusto namin magtaas lang. We need to cope up with the rising costs of medical equipment,” he explained.

Guiang, who has been a dentist for 24 years now, said he has invested in modern equipment to make sure his patients are safe from viruses. “I already equipped my clinics -Tarlac and Quezon City – two aerosol machines.”

“Actually, wala naman masyadong pinagbago ang mga gamit namin sa clinic before and during pandemic. Nagsusuot na talaga kami noon pa ng face mask, gloves, head cap, and wash our hands with alcohol. Nadagdag ang pagusuot namin ng PPEs at face shields,” he explained. “We have also pre-screened our patients before going to our clinic.”

Guiang encouraged the public to read and do research about dental hygiene in the clinic if they still have doubts.

“Filipino dentists should follow the guidelines of the Center for Disease Control aside from the Philippine Dental Association. Patients should check out the latest trends on reliable websites like the Department of Health and World Health Organization, among others. They also check the dentist’s name,” he said.

Asked about his best advice to people caught in the health crisis, Guiang said: “Never think that the pandemic will stop you from doing what you want to do. I did not give up dentistry. Ang ginawa ko ay pinagbuti ko na lang ang pagiging dentista ko.”

Villar asks SUCs, DOH to build one medical school per region

Sen. Cynthia Villar pushed for the establishment of at least one medical school in each and every region in the country as a way to increase the number of doctors and improve the healthcare workforce.

During the Senate deliberation on Senate Bill 1520 or the Medical Scholarship Bill, Villar said state universities and colleges (SUC) should be required to establish at least one medical school in all 17 regions of the country.

“Dapat magtayo ang malalaking SUC ng isang medical school sa bawat region. Kapag tinayuan mo all 17 regions, makukuha mo na ang target na number of doctors at nasa buong Pilipinas pa sila. Hindi mangyayari na may region na walang duktor,” Villar said.

About 79,800 doctors are needed in order to achieve the ideal ratio of 10 physicians for every 10,000 individuals. Villar said SUCs should work together with Department of Health-operated hospitals and start operating medical schools.

“The lack of public medical schools and the prohibitive cost of studying medicine discourage the youth to even consider a career as a doctor. We should start building medical schools in the provinces and providing scholarships to make the study of medicine affordable. If we do this, we will soon have more doctors,” Villar said.

Villar, who served as chairperson of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education when she was Las Pinas Representative, said she will propose a provision in the bill that will list and identify the SUCs and the DOH-operated hospitals which will be mandated to work together to establish medical schools all over the country.

Sen. Joel Villanueva, principal sponsor of the bill, agreed to include the proposal of Villar in the final version of the bill.

Villar also said she was surprised to learn that out of the 114 SUCs, only nine SUCs have a medical school. She said the absence of these institutions in highly developed areas such as Cebu and Regions 3 Central Luzon, 4A Southern Tagalog and Region 11 Davao Region should also be addressed.

The Nacionalista Party senator also proposed to amend the law giving free college education to include scholarships in medicine.

“Unfair na walang scholarship for medicine. Dapat baguhin natin ang scholarships offered in SUCs. Bakit walang medicine, napaka=importante ng mga duktor? Doctors should be the exception because unlike other professions, they cannot practice unless they complete premed and medicine-proper courses, “ Villar said.

Pageant columnist takes animal welfare to the streets

Manila Standard pageant columnist and National Awardee for 2019 Eton Concepcion is taking his animal welfare campaign to the streets these days as he feeds the homeless and hungry cats and dogs.

Concepcion, who also works for the Philippine National Police (PNP) at Camp Crame in Quezon City, considers this as his biggest achievement by far when it comes to taking care of stray animals.

“Last year, I came across Whitey, the street dog of a poor family living in a kariton with 5 small kids. Going home from office, I would bring Whitey food to eat, and also give some to the children. However, after several months I learned that they had relocated;

“But I consider to be my biggest achievement is Scaly, a street-smart dog that practically resembled a zombie when I saw her in April 2020. It was saddening to see the dog suffers from heavy mange or scabies. I knew how super itchy and achy it was. Subsequently, I started to give her food and mixed it with tablet-medicine to treat her malignant skin disease;

“And I also got support from some good Samaritans namely Queen Riza Oben Dormiendo, Queen Rochelle Ong, Queen Mary Salubre, PltCol Madelle Mandigma Pedrezuela, Directress Jhona Gimena, Ms. Chloe Sedanto-Mojica & Sedanto Family, PCCI Dragon Lady, Joya Gonzalez, Queen Michelle Vitug Encarnacion and The MMG Queens headed by Queen Mitzie G. Gil. It’s amazing that after a few weeks, Scaly has shown improvement and is being cured. She’s slowly turning into a beautiful dog,” said Concepcion in an online chat recently.

“Feeding the strays gives me even greater satisfaction knowing that they can only depend on you, especially, during this pandemic. While it’s better that we should stay at home, I think it’s a real challenge to come out and give them food. It’s funny that several FB friends have called me the new St. Francis of Assisi;

“I never saved or screen-captured them. It’s something to be compared to a saint but I’m just an ordinary person who happened to have a passion for animals. I believe that in a highly technical world, ruled by money, we have to make a difference in other’s lives. Like giving voice to the voiceless animals;

“I make it a point to post acts of cruelty committed against animals so to affect 3 or 5 of my 5 thousand friends. I know, it starts in a single step. I can say that I’ve achieved a lot in life, in my work and hobbies (pet contests);

“But I always believe that these awards and recognitions are nothing if we don’t please our Lord Jesus Christ. And to this I say that loving nature is loving God.”

Concepcion has dogs and cats which he considers as children. He pampers them with vitamins and food. And as a responsible pet owner, he takes them to the veterinary clinic for anti-rabies, deworming, 5-in-1, vitamins, etc. “We have 5 dogs in the house here in Quezon City, namely, Donald, Ughie, Jackie, Giggy and Shamcey and 3 cats: Cochi, Mingming and Catri, all rescued cats. Outside our gate, we support more street cats, which are used to our daily-hourly feeding program, we named them, Kitiket, Grandmaket, Momiket, Big Kahel and Small Kahel. It’s very important to check on their medical records and have regular visit to the vet. It’s part of responsible furparenthood.”

It’s costly to have pets in the house. But Concepcion said that he always save a portion of his salary for the food and medicines of his pets.

“It’s not just costly or expensive but its pretty tiring because they take much of your time. One sack of dog or cat food amounts to more or less two thousand bucks and cats and dogs are basically matakaw so I need to cut on my personal budget to provide for them. Medyo cut muna sa personal na luho,” he said.

Concepcion also enjoys joining dog shows where he creates colorful and festive costume for him and for his pets. He and his dogs have already received tons of recognition in various pet contests.

“Dog contests are no simple matter. They have become so competitive that it demands so much time, money and effort. But it always pays off when you win. It’s a most rewarding experience. I never expected to make a record in wins in pet costume contests in such a short period. I’ve become known in the Dog & Cat Fashion Show to bring amazing and unique costumes that some competitors have come to be intimidated of me. But I always come to a contest to enjoy first and bring something to the audience. I give them my best but not to expect much.”

So how did he come to love animals so much? Concepcion recalled: “I think it’s natural in me. But I guess, after watching the acclaimed 1998 movie ‘Babe’ about the lovable pig, opened up my eyes and influenced me to give up eating meat. And seeing stray cats and dogs as I walk after office, drove me to do something for them.”

Concepcion makes an appeal to non-animal lovers: “Well, not all people can be animal-lovers. I can’t do anything about it. But what I’m sad about is when people would be so cruel and treat animals inhumanely. We see them everywhere even in the media. I always got mad at how some are so insensitive to animals. Just recently, on national TV, somebody even boosted about how their family liked eating Ostrich. I unfriended one popular TV scriptwriter who boosted in her social media about eating Ostrich. Smart lady but so insensitive.” – Robert Requintina

Kids fashion designer finds success in online selling

Juvy Fantilanan is taking a break from designing kids fashion these days to give way to her online selling business dubbed Mikay Kikay Online Store.

Fantilanan, 43, tells us that she has been involved in this business for five years now. Her hubby helps her out during busy days. They have three children. “Ngayon lang uli ako naging busy sa online selling dahil affected ng pandemic ang fashion industry. Pero noon ko pa talaga na-establish ito.”

Dati ako lang naka-motor mag-isa. Para akong kargador,” she laughs. Would you believe she gets orders as far as Tarlac and Cavite?

Just like in fashion, where she specializes in kids fashion, Fantilanan describes herself as fussy. “Sa online selling mabusisi ako. No return, no exchange kasi ang items na kukunin ko from the suppliers. I pay in cash the items I get from the suppliers.“

For the month of July, the most popular ordered item in her store is the Samgyupsal grill from South Korea.

“Would you believe sir more than 25 pieces ang delivery ko nito for July only? Magandang pang-bonding ito sa mga pamilya lalo’t halos lahat nasa bahay lang these days,” Fantilanan said.

The next popular items are materials for v-blogging. “Andiyan ang mga microphone, ring light, cellphone or microphone stand, recorder. Iyan ang mga sikat din na items ngayon.”

Speaking of food, Fantilanan sells food online. “May sari–sari store ako at online merienda. Naka post ang luto ko araw-araw. Happy ako pag tine-text nila ako na masarap ang luto ko. Wala na siguro akong mahiling pa kung appreciated talaga nila ang ginawa mo.”

Fantilanan’s online business is doing well, she has encouraged her son Jarryl Paralejas and his wife Rosevie Mae Santos to join the same business. “Nagulat sila malaki pala ang income rito. So ngayon enjoy sa business nila.”

In her online store, you can get quality items at cheaper price. “Makikita rin nila sa online store ko iyong mga hinahanap nila sa ibang sikat na online shop. Much cheaper sa online store ko.”

She gives tips to people who want to open an online store. “Lakas ng loob at tibay ng katawan ang kailangan din. Madalas kasi in one day bibilhin mo lahat ng items sa mga supplier. Kung wala kang sasakyan, susuko ka. Higit sa lahat, as a seller, huwag tayong bogus para maiwasan din natin ang mga bogus na buyer.”

Fantilanan has graced the Thailand Fashion Week with her exquisite designs. She’s hopeful and praying everything will go back to normal soon. In the meantime, Fantilanan gets busy in her online shop, waiting for your orders.

Former broadcast journalist Steve Dailisan resumes aviation career

Hope springs eternal for former Kapuso broadcast journalist Steeeeve Dailisan.

Weeks after he shed tears when he left Cebu Pacific, Dailisan is soaring high once again – this time for Air Asia.

On Instagram August 15, Dailisan flashed a big smile as he wore the official red jacket of the popular airline. He shared an emotional post.

“Red” has always been associated with courage, passion, and adventure. It is usually painted in the sky at dusk — the beginning of a bright new day;

“A few months ago, I thought it was the end of my much loved aviation career. Tears were shed and so the vision turned blurry;

“But my good friend Claire Delfin told me, “Steve, bleak times are not always bad.” I figured, I will find my way back, so I carried on each day with high hopes, “Laban lang!”

“More or less 8 months into this pandemic, we should learn how to be tough, resilient, and bullish. As pilots, we were trained to rely on our instruments, but when all else fails, you just have to trust your instincts to survive;

“My foresight as a journalist perhaps helped a lot in planning the next step. It’s actually the same thing we do before we take on each flight, so we know what to expect and what to do if there’s inclement weather;

“I admit, I was anxious and exhausted but I never entertained the thought of giving up. This is what we need right now to stay afloat. FIGHT and WIN, ONE DAY at a TIME. True enough, we are never denied, just redirected by God to a better path;

“And for everyone who lost their dream job, their nurtured businesses, their family member or anything precious during this difficult time, just hang in there! You will definitely find your way back! PRAY and BELIEVE that a new opportunity awaits;

“Today, I am RED-y for yet another challenging role — to be with you, and empathize with you, our flying public. I am more than RED-y to provide you relevant information to ensure your safety, comfort, and #Allstar experience amid this pandemic;

“Indeed, it’s never too late to dream big, to reach the sky, and be with your stars! Lord, whatever comes my way, I am #Allstar RED-y;

“Just like all my pilot colleagues and cabin crew friends, I shall patiently look forward to the time when all of us will be RED-y to paint the skies again. As my former mentor, Capt. Noel said, “It should not matter whether with red, blue, gold or yellow, we all share a common horizon!”

“For now, stay safe and healthy!”

“Still, FIGHTING!”- Robert  Requintina
