AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) - Auburn University fans are remembering one of their most spirited supporters, Mike Cooper — better known as "Helmet Guy" — who passed away in an accident in Clanton, Alabama over the weekend.
Cooper, a 1974 Auburn graduate, became one of Auburn's most cherished supporters, leading chants in his trademark plastic helmet at Plainsman Park for more than two decades. He rarely missed a weekend of Auburn baseball, traveling from Clanton to cheer on the Tigers. His energy wasn't limited to baseball — he also became a familiar presence at Auburn football, basketball, and softball games, often invited by coaches to help lift the atmosphere.
Auburn Mayor Ron Anders remembers him fondly, saying, "His enthusiasm never took a day off. What a guy! The Auburn Spirit is a little dimmer today. Worked for my dad, coached my brother's baseball team, brought us peaches every summer. Loyal to his people and his university. Never to be replaced but always to be remembered."
Auburn University Athletics is expected to release a statement honoring Cooper, one of its most devoted and beloved fans.
