Savellano was among the 13 members of the Marines that were killed in a nearly 16-hour long clash between the government troops and the local terrorist group in Madaya, Marawi City on Friday. There were also 40 other soldiers wounded from the fight.
Apparently, Savellano and his team encountered some members of the Maute terror group at Barangay Lilod Madaya which is one of the areas that is under the control of the local terror group. The intense firefight started from 3:30 AM to 6:00 PM. The mission became difficult for the soldiers because the terrorists used humans as shields.
The brave soldier's remains was among the eight (8) Marines that were taken from Marawi City to the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City.
On Sunday night, President Rodrigo Duterte led the arrival honors at the Villamor Air Base for the eight soldiers killed in hours-long gun battle between government forces and Maute militants in Marawi last Friday. He arrived at the location around 7:50 PM where he showed his compassion for the deaths of the Marine soldiers and consoled the families for their lost.
Upon the President's arrival, the metal caskets of the Marine's remains were covered with the Philippine flag and were carried out of the C-130 plane by fellow soldiers and were rested on high-lift ramps in front of the grandstand.
President Duterte approached each family member and expressed his sentiments and condolences. He also extended financial support to the families of the soldiers.
The eight Marines who were honored were First Lieutenant Raymond M. Abad, First Lieutenant John Frederick S. Savellano, Staff Sergeant. Joven Q. Triston, Sergeant Simeon I. Plares, Corporal Rolan H. Sumagpang, Private First Class Marvin Russel D. Gomez, Private Bernie Jhon B. Lunas, and Private First Class Gener C. Tinangag.
However, he did not give interviews after the ceremony and proceeded inside the Philippine Marine headquarters in Fort Bonifacio. There, he visited two wakes of the Marines whose remains were firstly taken in on June 10. The two fallen soldiers who were also killed in action were Corporal Romula Garcia and Private First Class Eddie Cardona Jr. whose remains lie in state at the Acero Hall inside the Philippine Marine Headquarters.
"Your sons, brothers, or husbands brought honor to our country," Marine commandant Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat stated.
In a Facebook post, Savellano's friends and relatives expressed their lost and paid tribute for the fallen soldier.
"You are our hero 1st Lt. John (Jeff) Frederick Savellano. We salute you ! May you find your final resting place in the loving embrace of our Lord God. Finally, thank you Jeff for offering your life so that we may enjoy our freedom," wrote Geng Lopez Gamboa, First Lieutenant Frederick Savellano's godmother.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines were in hopes to finish the catastrophe in Marawi City and wipe out all remaining members of the local terrorist group before the Indepen; pdence day, unfortunately, it was the clash is still on-going but the President stated that whether the crisis is still ongoing or not, the Philippine flag will be raised in Marawi City.
