Carlos, a Caviteno was described as the bravest in his team.
According to journalist Josephine Jaron Codilla, PFC JETHRO VINCENT CARLOS of the 15th Scout Ranger “Mandirigma” Company was overheard mumbling the words, “Mama, Mama”, tears streaming down his eyes while he and fellow injured Musangs were rushed to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Iligan City.
Carlos and two other Musang buddies were hit by a volley of bullets from Maute militants during a firefight yesterday, July 4, 2017.
Carlos’ platoon leader remarked that it was heartbreaking to watch his brave buddy calling out his Mama all the way from Marawi to the hospital in Iligan, only to be declared dead a few minutes after arrival.
“True to what Cavitenos are known for, Jethro was a warrior, the bravest in his team, volunteering to do stuff other than being his platoon’s radioman,” Codilla wrote.
On the day he died, Carlos performed a risky task that ordinary mortals would not normally do.
He lobbed a grenade at Maute terrorists holed inside a building a few inches from where he and his companions were located. During a lull in the firefight, however, terrorists from another building fired at them, three bullets hitting Jethro, one fatally in the nape. Some other bullets ricocheting off nearby walls hit four of his other companions.
Carlos crying for his Mama proves only one thing that a “warrior, no matter how brave, indeed becomes like a child once again, looking for the people he most loves in the face of death.”
Netizen Samuel Yunque commented that he fought side by side Carlos when he sustained his fatal injuries. “Kagitingan at katapangan ang pinakita ni PFC Carlos sa laban namin kahapon para sa Inang bayan. Saludo kami lahat sayo. Ituloy namin ang laban. Rest in peace Ranger. Magtagumpay tayo. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. Hoooaaahh!!!Ranger!!!”
Rosalyn Calumba Basilio-Vallega wrote: “nakakaiyak… nakakalungkot… SALUTE SA MAGIGITING NA SUNDALO NG PILIPINAS….”
Arnulfo Nelson Albis remarked: “Talagang kahit Saan, nanay pa rin ang tinatawag… Saludo ako sau… Nawa’y sumalangit nawa ang iyong kaluluwa… Pakikiramay sa mga naulila.”
With the on-going battle in Marawi, almost 400 soldiers already died. The Maute group will fight until the end. The war in Marawi ending soon?
