Two were killed following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck the island of Leyte on Thursday afternoon.

One fatality was reported in Kananga, Leyte, according to Mayor Rowena Codilla.

"Ngayon nagre-rescue na sila, may na-retrieve na kami na isang dead saka isang wounded. I don't know the age pero 'yung namatay is lalaki, tapos 'yung wounded is babae," said Kananga, Leyte Mayor Rowena Codilla in a radio dzBB interview.

"Actually wala pa talaga akong exact na count (ng casualties), naghihintay din kasi kami ng rescue from the province kasi kailangan namin ng mga equipment," she added.

In a separate "24 Oras" interview, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez disclosed that there was also a fatality in his constituency.

Gomez added that about 40 persons were injured.

"Meron kaming reported na number of patients dito, mga about 40.

Gomez also took note that their three highways had cracks, but they are still passable.
