Veteran investigative journalist Manuel Mejorada has responded on his YouTube channel to Senator Grace Poe’s insinuation that PPEs purchased by the Department of Health are overpriced.
Mejorada lectured Poe that buying PPEs for the frontliners is a race among nations to protect their frontliners fighting against the covid-19 pandemic while there is a short supply. If I may add, the law of supply and demand applies here.
Mejorada remarked that this is not the right time for Poe to make such comment because it undermines the image of the Department of Health and the government as a whole.
Mejorada added that in time of crisis, if Poe notices something isn’t right, she should not use this to grab the centerstage and gain media mileage. Mejorada said that if indeed Poe was correct that the price of PPE is between the range of PhP400-PhP1000, perhaps that pricing would apply during normal times.
Mejorada explained that we are a time when nations are competing to get their hands on the PPEs and the Philippines has no capability to mass produce the PPEs in a short period of time.
Mejorada said the situation in the ground wherein our doctors and nurses are dying because of covid-19 demand for quick action and we cannot afford to wait and do a price canvassing like going to Divisoria to buy PPE at the lowest possible price. In other words, what the DOH is doing is rush purchase.
Mejorada wrapped the the YouTube video with a message to Senator Grace Poe. “Wag na natin maghintay pa na magmura because each minute, each hour, each day matters. Yan lang po ang mensahe ko kay Senator Grace Poe.“

Kakabasa ko lang sa aking Twitter, na nagpuna na naman daw si Senator Grace Poe tungkol sa pagbili ng Department of Health ng mga protective personal equipment (PPE) sa halagang PHP1800 per set.
Ang sabi ni Senator Poe, overpriced daw ito. Kasi daw nagcanvass sya at sa pagka-alam nya ang tinatawag na market value daw ng bawat PPE ay PHP 400- PHP1000 ang halaga ng bawat set.
Now #1, baka di alam ni Senator Grace Poe na in short supply ngayon. Ang mga PPE ay hindi lamang sa Pilipinas kung di sa buong mundo. Lahat ng mga bansa ay nag-uunahan sa pagbili ng mga PPE upang mabigyan ng protection ang kanilang mga doctors, nurses, hospital staffs at iba pang mga frontliners sa laban na ito sa covid-19 pandemic.

In this time of crisis, kung may nakita syang mga diperensya, sana ho wag na gamitin para makakuha ng pansin to grab the centerstage and gain media mileage. Kasi po kung totoo man ang sinabi nya, na ang market price ay PhP 400 hanggang PhP1000 bawat isa, yan siguro ay sa mga normal na panahon na walang nag-aagawan.
We are in a situation na nag-aagawan yung mga bansa at ang Pilipinas po ay walang capability to mass produce the PPEs in a short period of time. Nagmamadalian eh.
Hindi tayo makahintay ng maghahanap pa tayo na kung saan ang mura. Hindi naman pwede na pumunta ka sa Divisoria at magcanvass ka doon dahil ang kailangan natin ay hundreds of thousands if not millions.
Itong PPE kasi ay one-time use lang at kalinagan maganda iyong materyales na hindi napapasok ng virus. Kasi pag-nakapasok yan sa katawan ng isang doctor, nurse o kahit sa isang janitor sa isang hospital na gumagawa ng disinfection, nako sigurado patay.
Nakita natin, dami na mga doctor and nurses. So this time, yung priority ng Department of Health ng ating gobyerno is to be able to procure, na makabili ng mga PPE sa madalian. Rush sale. O hindi rush sale kasi kung rush sale bagsak presyo. Rush purchase.
Minamadali po natin at kung maari agawan natin ang iba, unahan natin ang iba. At kahit bumayad pa natin ng mas mahal, gawin na natin. Wag na natin maghintay pa na magmura because each minute, each hour, each day matters. Yan lang po ang mensahe ko kay Senator Grace Poe.
