Escueta commends bench players for staying ready

San Beda University Red Lions head coach Yuri Escueta has commended his bench players for their decent performance in their 76-53 rout of the San Sebastian College Golden Stags in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament on Friday night.

According to Escueta, he is glad that his off-the-bench players are not discouraged, even if sometimes they are being fielded regularly in Red Lions matches.

“Players in practice, you can really see how hard they work; my confidence and the coaches’ confidence never wavered. It’s just that they have to be ready. If you’re called to play, you should be ready. If not, stay positive,” Escueta said.

“That’s what’s great about my bench players. They are always ready, and even when not used, they maintain a positive attitude. They carry that positivity when they play. Basketball players understand that,” he added.

Among his bench players, Filipino-Canadian rookie Jomel Puno has excelled the most, as he finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds against the Golden Stags.

“We were lucky to have him,” said Escueta on Puno, who was recruited to San Beda with the help of TNT Tropang Giga guard Jayson Castro.

Currently, the Red Lions are in second place in the standings with a 7-1 win-loss slate, while the Stags fell to a 3-6 record.
