Robbie Manalang shines in crucial endgame as Pasig City forces do-or-die match

Robbie Manalang delivered timely baskets in the endgame as Pasig City MCW Sports stayed alive in the 2023 MPBL Northern Division quarterfinals with a 65-61 Game 2 victory over Caloocan Batang Kankaloo on Friday night at the Caloocan Sports Complex.

Trailing 56-58 late in the fourth quarter, Manalang drilled a corner three-pointer to surge Pasig City to the top at 59-58. Kenny Roger Rocacurva followed this with a free throw, and Manalang added a floater, while Ryan Costelo made a basket for a 64-58 lead.

Caloocan City made its last push on a three-pointer by Reil Cervantes to cut the deficit to 61-64 with 19 seconds left, but a free throw by Anton Peralta sealed the victory for Pasig City.

Manalang finished the game with 23 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter, while Rocacurva added 16 markers, including 12 in the third period, as Pasig City tied the best-of-three series at 1-1.

“We just prepared ourselves mentally for this game because that is what we lacked in Game 1,” Manalang said. “The coaching staff did a great job in preparing us for this must-win game.”

Paul Sanga finished with 12 points, including three outside conversions, while Gabby Espinas and Ronnie Matias added 10 markers apiece for the Batang Kankaloo.

The MPBL has yet to set a schedule for the do-or-die Game 3 between Pasig City and Caloocan City.
