In a surprising turn of events, the St. Dominic College of Asia Pikemen secured a significant upset in the Pinoyliga Next Man Cup, stunning the UAAP champions, the De La Salle University Green Archers, with a 71-62 victory on Saturday afternoon at Enderun College in Taguig City.
Michael Sosing spearheaded the upset for the debuting Pikemen with a near triple-double of 17 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, while Monsour Proel also had 17 points with three outside conversions.
Edward Daquioag, the younger brother of former University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers guard Ed Daquioag, also made his presence felt with 14 points, while Edward Clarete also finished with 14 for St. Dominic.
The Green Archers took a 19-14 lead after the first 10 minutes and were still ahead at 53-47 after three quarters before the Pikemen turned things around with a 24-9 blast behind Clarete and Proel in the fourth quarter to pull off the stunning win.
Elaijah Gavrielle Gollena top-scored with 21 points, including three outside shots, while Prince Alao and Earl Jared Abadam had nine and seven, respectively, as the Green Archers dropped to 1-1.
Meanwhile, the Arellano University Chiefs notched their second win in three games with an 83-71 victory over the debuting Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.
King Vinoya was named Player of the Game for the Chiefs as he tallied 23 points, including three outside shots, to go with four rebounds, four assists, and a steal in the win.
