Coach Kung Fu: UST’s first season loss inevitable

Head Coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes believed that the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses’ first loss in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament was inevitable.

The long-time UST mentor stated that he had already anticipated the first defeat of the Golden Tigresses, particularly after their underwhelming performances in their previous matches.

“Ang maganda lang, as early as second game ng second round, na nakita namin or naramdaman namin, ‘yung breaking point, nagkasalubong kami ngayong araw,” Reyes said in a post-game interview on Sunday night.

“Hinihintay namin talaga ito, hindi lang namin alam kung kailan darating, and now nangyari na sa harap namin, at least (pag uusapan naming kung) ano pa bang pwede naming ibigay sa mga bata or sila kung ano pa ang pwede nilang gawin,” he added.

After securing victories in their first eight games of the season, the Golden Tigresses finally faced defeat against the National University Lady Bulldogs, with a score of 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20, on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“No reasons or alibi kung bakit kami natalo, talagang nagkulang kami dun sa depensa, hindi kami nakapagdepensa, same thing ‘yung blocking namin at ‘yung service namin, ‘yung ‘yung (mga lapses) na hindi kayang ipanalo ang isang game,” Reyes said.

“Gaya nga kung babalikan namin ‘yung (previous) games namin, dami naming takeaways na kinukuha during our trainings, kung saan kami nagkulang,” he added. “This time, madami kaming lapses na dapat itama.”

The Golden Tigresses will resume action on April 3 against the Adamson University Lady Falcons at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
