Magnolia kicked off its Philippine Cup campaign with a commanding 106-75 victory over Converge on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Ian Sangalang led the Hotshots’ balanced offensive with 17 points. Calvin Abueva and Jio Jalalon added 14 markers each, even as Mark Barroca delivered 12.
Magnolia, which fell short in its Commissioner’s Cup title aspirations against San Miguel Beer, led by as much as 33 against the FiberXers.
Justin Arana paced Converge with 17 points and six rebounds. Alec Stockton added 15 points, while Bryan Santos chipped in 13.
It was the FiberXers’ fifth straight defeat.
When asked about Magnolia’s title aspirations for this conference, coach Chito Victolero said, “Lagi kong sinasabi na, I like our chances (for this conference), kasi nakikita ko ang mga batang to na sobrang grabeng magtrabaho. I’m very confident and trust them, kung paano silang magexecute sa conference na ito.”
“Although we’re short last conference, I’m still happy. Wala kang masasabi. As long as we start strong, at least we have a good chance.”
