UP stuns Adamson, ends 15-game losing streak

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons finally barged into the win column of the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament after a 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 28-26 beating of the Adamson University Falcons on Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate, Manila.

The Fighting Maroons finally entered the win column in their 12th try for a 1-11 record, also ending a 15-game losing streak dating back to last season.

“It was very good for us. It was our first win, and I think the introduction of a new system and culture to the team were the ones that brought us to where we are now,” said UP head coach Vip Isada.

Back-to-back blocks by Leo Coguimbal and Jude Aguilar on Louis Gamban put the Soaring Falcons ahead at 26-25, but UP’s Dan Nicolas responded with a quick kill to tie the score at 26-all.

UP then seized the lead at 27-26 on Brian Chavez’s right-hand tip before Adamson’s Dan Gutierrez touched the net to give the Fighting Maroons the win.

“Sobrang saya kasi para sa amin lahat ng oras namin, ikino-commit namin sa training. Masaya na makita ‘yung fruit ng paghihirap namin,” said Jaivee Malabanan, who led UP with 17 points, 19 receptions, and nine digs.

Marc Paulino paced Adamson with 20 points; Francis Casas added 18, while Coguimbal and Aguilar managed 12 and 11, respectively. They dropped to 4–7.
