Wonju DB Promy star Ethan Alvano, the first foreign player to ever win the Korean Basketball League (KBL) Domestic MVP award, is now setting his sights on capturing the league’s assist award.
According to the Filipino-American guard, he is determined to secure the citation next season, especially after finishing as the runner-up to Goyang Sono Skygunners point guard Lee Jung-hyun in the voting.
“In the last game of the regular season, I was ranked second in assists behind Lee, and this is a strong motivation. I will give more assists next season,” Alvano said in an interview on Monday night.
The former San Miguel-Alab Pilipinas guard, who finished the season with 6.6 assists per game average, had multiple double-double points and assists games this season for the league-leading DB Promy.
Alvano made history by becoming the first non-Korean to win the KBL Domestic MVP trophy following the league’s decision to allow foreign and Asian Quota Players to qualify for the award.
He won the MVP trophy after garnering 50 out of 111 votes, three points more than the 47 votes received by his DB Promy teammate Sangjae Kang.
“Due to KBL regulations, I can now receive the MVP award for a domestic player rather than the MVP award for a foreign player. I am really happy and honored to receive this award. I will express my gratitude to those who voted for me,” Alvano said.
“Honestly, I thought Kang Sang-jae would receive it, so I was really grateful that he congratulated me. Kang is a great team captain and also a player who deserves the MVP award,” he added.
The DB Promy earned an outright semifinal entry after finishing the elimination round in first place.
