Alyssa Valdez likened the Creamline Cool Smashers’ championship run in the 2024 PVL 1st All-Filipino Conference to her first championship with the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament.
Valdez noted that the Cool Smashers’ challenges throughout this conference mirrored her own struggles in leading the Blue Eagles to a title victory that UAAP season against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers.
“It was like (UAAP) season 76 all over again; ang dami naming struggles,” Valdez said. “This whole season ang naibigay nito (sa amin) ‘yung hope, kahit na talo ng talo kami hindi kami iniwan ng fans namin.”
In UAAP Season 76, the Blue Eagles finished the eliminations in third place with a 10-4 record and had to beat the Adamson University Lady Falcons and the National University Lady Bulldogs in the stepladder semifinals to reach the finals against DLSU.
For finishing the double-round eliminations with a 14-0 record, the Lady Spikers got an outright 1-0 lead in the virtual best-of-five finals, but the Blue Eagles turned things around by winning Games 1, 3, and 4.
In the just-concluded PVL 1st All-Filipino Conference, the Cool Smashers barely made it to the Final Four with their 8-3 elimination round record before surviving the semifinals round with a 2-1 win-loss slate.
“God is really good. He gave it to us; teamwork talaga makes the dream work,” Valdez said.
