Cone: Ginebra aimed to avoid SMB’s sudden death scenario

Coach Tim Cone emphasized the significance of Barangay Ginebra swiftly eliminating Magnolia to evade a knockout scenario in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

Consequently, Ginebra executed a dominant performance, overpowering the Hotshots with a resounding 99-77 victory and securing their spot as the first semifinalist in the all-Filipino tournament.

“We have lots of respect for Magnolia. They’ve handled us quite a bit over the last couple of years, so we know we had to come out and play a great game,” said Cone after their victory.
The second-seeded Gin Kings entered their quarterfinal matchup with the Hotshots holding a twice-to-beat advantage, and Cone’s team ensured they capitalized on this edge.

Cone emphasized the importance of avoiding the fate of the top-seeded San Miguel, who was upset by Terrafirma, highlighting the team’s determination to navigate through the playoffs successfully.

“We saw what happened to San Miguel in the first game, and we didn’t want that (forced to a sudden death) happening to us,” said the coach.

“So I just felt like the guys came out aggressively and did a great job defensively, and we had really good energy throughout the game and kept on pushing and pushing.”
