The University of Santo Tomas Junior Tiger Sands successfully defended their gold with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Far Eastern University-Diliman Lady Baby Tamaraws in the finals of the UAAP Season 86 High School Girls Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday night at the Sands SM By The Bay.
Khy Progella, Cameron Grace Villaluz, and Grithney Jhyn Dadang were instrumental in the Junior Tiger Sands’ unbeaten eight-match winning run to capture their second straight UAAP title.
“Sobrang happy kasi ngayong season sobrang hirap manalo eh,” said Junior Tiger Sands head coach Paul Jan Doloiras. “’Yung NU, FEU, and Adamson talaga lahat sila naka prepare and blessing sa amin napunta ‘yung panalo.”
Progella was later named the season MVP, while Dadang took home the Rookie of the Year honors.
“Ang masasabi ko palang po talaga ay sobrang grateful po namin na umabot po ulit kami dito sa Finals or championship po na laro, and sobrang blessed lang na binigyan kami ng oppurtunity nina coach na kami po maglaro this season,” said Progella.
Meanwhile, the National University Nazareth School Bullpups claimed their first-ever title in the boy’s beach volleyball tournament after a come-from-behind 15-21, 21-16, 15-12 win over dethroned champions FEU-D Baby Tamaraws.
“History po kasi ‘yung seniors men’s talo, lagi pong talo sila, lagi po silang runner-up, promise po namin sa kanila na babawi po kami, and tinupad po namin ‘yun,” said NUNS player John Wayne Dionela.
