Jema Galanza: Playing with younger Alas players is ‘a welcome challenge’

Jessica “Jema” Galanza considers it a good challenge to play alongside the younger players on the Alas Pilipinas national women’s volleyball team in the 2024 FIVB Challenger Cup, scheduled from July 4 to 7 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

According to the Creamline Cool Smashers star, she is in the process of adjusting back to the system of head coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito and is finding ways to contribute to the youth-laden Alas team.

“Sobrang excited ako na makabalik sa national team at makaranas uli ng mga international games,” said Galanza. “It’s a good challenge for me to be with my teammates, kaya kailangan ko talagang mag-adjust sa sistema ni coach Jorge.”

“Malaki talaga ang pinagbago at sobrang saya ko sa mga batang kasama ko dahil na-challenge ako at marami akong natutunan. Nakakatuwa kasi mas relaxed sila kasi mga bata sila,” she added.

The reigning PVL Finals MVP was included on the Alas Pilipinas roster along with Creamline teammates Diana Carlos, Mhicaela Belen, Alyssa Solomon, and Casiey Dongallo.

They joined the national team holdovers Cherry Rondina, Eya Laure, Fifi Sharma, Thea Gagate, Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Cherry Nunag, Dell Palomata, Faith Nisperos, Jennifer Nierva, Arah Panique, Julia Coronel, and Vanie Gandler.

The 2024 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Challenger Cup will serve as a qualifier for the 2025 Volleyball Nations League.

Alas Pilipinas Women came off a historic bronze medal finish in the AVC Challenge Cup for Women earlier this month at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
