Jeramer Cabanag came up with timely free throws as the Caloocan Batang Kankaloo escaped with an 84-78 victory over the Valenzuela Classics VACARGO in the 2024 MPBL season on Wednesday night at the Caloocan Sports Complex.
With the Classics threatening to be within 74-78 after a basket by Dennis Santos, Cabanag knocked down two of his three free throws to extend the Batang Kankaloo’s lead to 80-74.
Valenzuela got another conversion from Santos to cut it to 76-80, but two more charity shots from Cabanag made it an 82-76 count with under a minute remaining in the contest.
Cabanag finished the game with a MPBL career-high-tying 25 points, including three three-point conversions, to go with four rebounds to be named Player of the Game for the Batang Kankaloo.
“Nag stick lang ako sa gameplan ni coach, kung papaano mag execute. Execute lang kahit na nagra-run na ‘yung kalaban, and to stay composed lang para makuha namin ‘yung panalo,” Cabanag said.
“Credit din sa coaches sa guidance nila, pati na ‘yung sipag ng mga teammates namin buong laro, and sa mga veterans din sa mga advices na binibigay nila,” added the former San Beda University Red Lions gunner.
Reil Cervantes came off the bench to deliver 10 markers, while Marion Magat also chipped in nine markers and five rebounds as the Batang Kankaloo improved to a 9-6 win-loss slate.
JR Quiñahan tallied 18 points and five rebounds, while Santos contributed 14 markers as the Classics dropped to a 10-9 win-loss card.
