Barangay Ginebra point guard RJ Abarrientos took to Instagram on Friday night to call out a netizen who, he said, used a dummy account to send him death threats after the Gin Kings’ 108-104 loss to Meralco in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals.
Frustrated by the extreme reaction, Abarrientos shared screenshots of the threats to raise awareness. He condemned those who resort to such actions over lost bets, emphasizing the need for respect and accountability in sports fandom.
“Posting this for awareness! Grabe talaga mga tao sa social media. Talo lang sa pusta, biglang death threats gamit dummy accounts, pati pamilya dinadamay pa. Paki-report, mga kabs! Nakakaalarma na yung ganitong ugali,” Abarrientos wrote.
“Naglalaro kami ng maayos, at trabaho namin ’to, parte ng basketball ang matalo. Sa mga kapwa ko players, hindi dapat tinotolerate yung ganito. 
,” he added.

The post was also shared on Abarrientos Facebook page, where it has been shared 86 times and received various reactions from fans, most of whom expressed disappointment and anger.
Many condemned the threats, calling for respect and responsibility among sports bettors and supporters.
Fans also urged Abarrientos to take care of himself and report the threats to authorities. Many expressed concern over his safety, emphasizing that no player should have to deal with such extreme reactions from fans or bettors.

Just last week, Abarrientos clapped back at a netizen who mocked him and his fiancée after he posted a video of them dining at a restaurant.
Abarrientos and the fourth-seeded Gin Kings will face fifth-seeded Bolts in a do-or-die Game 3 of their quarterfinals showdown this Sunday at the Ynares Center. The winner will advance to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.
