Partners Alex Eala and Coco Gauff lost a tough match against Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, yielding after three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open women’s doubles.
Despite taking an early 5-3 lead in the opening set, Eala and Gauff were unable to hold off the experienced Italian duo, who rallied to take the set, 7-5.
The Filipina-American tandem responded strongly in the second, regaining momentum and forcing a decider with a convincing 6-3 win.
Both pairs went toe-to-toe in the super tiebreak, trading points until a 6-6 deadlock. However, Errani and Paolini dug deep in the final stretch to close out the match, 10-7.
The loss ends Eala’s campaign in Rome, but with her performance, the world No. 70 is expected to climb the WTA rankings.
“It was a tough one. We had our chances,” Eala said. “But there’s a lot to take away from this experience, and I’m proud of how we fought.”
