COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — While football may dominate the fall sports season, it's softball that's scoring big for the Columbus economy.
For more than a decade, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state softball tournament has been held at the South Commons Softball Complex — a facility originally built to host the 1996 Olympic softball games.

That Olympic legacy continues to pay off, as Columbus now serves as the headquarters for both the GHSA state tournament and the GIAA state tournament.
According to Valley Hospitality, more than 30 teams are staying at their properties this week. The consistent partnership with high school tournaments each October brings a welcome boost for local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
"We know that no matter what September might look like, October is going to look pretty good from a softball perspective," said Cassie Myers, director of communications at Valley Hospitality. "If I can get you here one time, you're coming back. You're going to fall in love with the city and spend more money in local restaurants and shops."

The GHSA state softball tournament kicks off next Wednesday.
WRBL's sports team will be following local teams as they compete for a state title.
