Hugh Freeze fired as Auburn Head Football Coach

AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) - Auburn University has announced that Hugh Freeze has been relieved of his duties as Head Football Coach.

In a statement, Athletic Director John Cohen said, "I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program. Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately."

This comes after the Tigers' latest game Saturday night, where they lost 10-3 to Kentucky, and falling to 4-5 on the season, 1-5 in SEC play. Freeze will leave Auburn with an overall record of 15-19, with a 6-16 record in SEC games.

During and after the Kentucky game, there were audible boos and chants calling for the firing of Freeze coming from Auburn's student section.

WRBL Sports Director Jack Patterson asked Freeze for a response to those chants, and he replied, "You know, like I've said all year long, my job is to get this team ready to play and win games. And we have failed to do that this year. And it's frustrating. I still believe we're really close, and I know that, that team plays hard for this university. And it's it's sickening that we haven't delivered, no one wants to do that more than I. And our family loves it. Our staff loves it. But at the end of the day, you know, I'm frustrated, too. I get it. And, we all know that when we sign up for this and, we accept what comes with it. But, you know, I love what we're doing here, and it's just. But we haven't gotten the results, and that's frustrating."

Freeze was hired by Auburn on November 29, 2022 after the Tigers moved on from Bryan Harsin. Despite investment in the program and NIL, Auburn struggled throughout Freeze's tenure, specifically during conference play.

Defensive Coordinator DJ Durkin will be the interim Head Coach for the Tigers for the rest of the season. Stay with WRBL News 3 for continuing coverage on Auburn's coaching search.
