UST assistant coach calls out The Varsitarian over ‘painful’ Golden Tigresses write-up

University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses assistant coach Yani Fernandez expressed disappointment over a critical article published by the school publication, The Varsitarian, about the team’s current campaign in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.

In the said article that came out on Tuesday, The Varsitarian compared the Golden Tigresses’ slow start to the team’s Season 80 campaign, when they failed to reach the Final Four.

Fernandez said the comparison was painful for the coaching staff and the players, noting that the article came from the university’s own official publication.

“Masakit din sa part namin, especially hindi lang siguro sa volleyball. Kasi even other coaches of other events, especially sa basketball, nakakaranas din niyan,” Fernandez said in an interview with Abante Sports’ Jonas Lavarias.

While acknowledging that news publications have the right to express their opinions, Fernandez said it was difficult for the team to accept such criticism from a school-affiliated site.

“Again, this is a free country, oo, pero sa amin lang kasi na school publication siya na affiliated ng UST, parang hindi siya nakakatulong sa part namin,” he said.

Fernandez added that the team hopes for more supportive coverage moving forward, particularly in terms of timing when critical pieces are published.

“So hopefully, matulungan din kami and then yung timing din nila na paano mag-publish ng kung ano man. Maramdaman namin yung suporta din nila, hindi yung other way around,” he said.

The Golden Tigresses currently has a 3-3 win-loss slate as they continue to adjust to the system of returning head coach Ceseal “Shaq” delos Santos. (AC)
