Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala and partner Venus Williams moved into the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open women’s doubles after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alexandra Osborne of Australia and American Catherine Harrison on Wednesday night in Germany.
Williams and Eala leaned on their combined youth and experience to easily dispatch their round-of-16 opponents and continue their campaign in the grass-court event
The pair converted four of their seven break-point opportunities, compared to only two breaks on three chances by Osborne and Harrison. Williams and Eala also won 54 total points against their opponents’ 50.
Despite landing a lower first-serve percentage at 71 percent compared to the 78 percent posted by Osborne and Harrison, the Williams-Eala tandem proved more effective on second serves, winning 54 percent of those points against their rivals’ 43 percent.
The duo won 12 games overall, including eight service games, while Osborne and Harrison managed seven games and five service-game victories.
Williams and Eala also edged their opponents in service points won, 35-31, while both teams were tied with 19 receiving points won.
The victory marked another encouraging result for Eala, who continues to gain experience on the grass-court circuit alongside seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams.
With the win, Williams and Eala advanced to the round of 8 of the WTA 500 tournament as they continue their bid for the doubles title in Bad Homburg. (AC)
