The lines in the palm are actually developed in the mother's womb for around 12 weeks. The palm lines help the hand's skin stretch and squeeze. These are also called palmar flexion creases. They are required to divide your palm into sections for flexion. 

The palm creases help in compressing the skin on your hand when you change its form. Without these creases, you could have loose skin hanging out under your fingers.
