On his Facebook account, Daniel Angelo Salasalan posted and even confirmed to news reporters that he had only P12,000 deposited in his BPI bank account, after checking it on June 7, he was in extreme disbelief after seeing his account balance increased to P12.4 billion. The next day, the balance dropped to zero and then debited with P8.1 million.
BPI seeked help from the National Bureau of Investigation's Cybercrime division.
Through their investigations, the NBI established that Salasalan was only lying, they claimed that his accusations and the documents he provided were all fake.
"He used falsified documents alleging na galing ‘yon sa kanyang [it came from his] account with BPI. But the truth is walang [there are no] documents or entry sa kanyang [in his] account pertaining to the P12 billion and P8 million," said Manuel Eduarte, chief of the NBI’s Cybercrime Division.
"There is a verification conducted by the bank and (it was) very much different do’n sa pinost ni [from what was posted by] Mr. Salasalan," added Eduarte.
In a letter written by Salasalan, he expressed his apology to the bank, claiming he did not know that there'll be severe consequences of his actions.
"Nais ko pong humingi ng tawad sa nagawa ko po sa interview ng CNN Philippines at ABS-CBN. Inaamin ko po na hindi totoo ang mga posting na ‘yon. Alam ko po malaking dagok sa bangko ang nagawa ko po," he said in a letter.
"Hindi ko po akalain na ang fake news ko ay lalaki ng ganito," he said.
He regretted posting it on social media. He didn't know that media networks will publicly release his post.
"Nagpost po ako akala ko po ay joke lang ang lahat hindi ko po akalain na ilalabas ito ng CNN Philippines at ng ABS-CBN. Nais ko po sana maging feeling milyonaryo pero mali pala ang nagawa ko at pinagsisisihan ko po ito."
"Yung…post ko noon June 08, 2017 sa aking Facebook regarding 12 billion at 8 billion…bilang katuwaan lang, ngunit hindi ko naisip na mali at hindi ito paglaruang post sa social media. Handa ako bawiin sa media lahat nasabi ko sa interview," he added.
However, damage has been done. There's no way of taking it back.
"Hindi biro…ito. Siguro kung kay magkakaibigan, pero kung may press na nag-iinterview sa’yo, hindi na biro ang treatment nito," Eduarte said.

The BPI will continue to press charges against Salasalan. He will be charged with complaints of falsification by private individuals and use of falsified documents under the Revised Penal Code and violation of Section 4(c) (4) of Cybercrime Prevention Act.
BPI Enterprise Services Group head Ramon Jocson stated earlier that customers who claimed to have billions transferred in their accounts is absurd. Depositing 1 billion would mean that P1,000 bills were deposited into at least five BPI machines 24 hours for five straight days.
Let this be a lesson to everyone who are spreading fake news.
