An open letter disputing former Ms. Universe Catriona Gray’s innuendos surrounding the dispersal and arrest of the Gay Pride participants has been making the rounds on socmed.
The open letter was posted in the FB page Luminous by Trixie Cruz-Angeles & Ahmed Paglinawan and obviously penned by one of the admins following the statement made by the former Ms. Universe Catriona Gray criticizing the incident.
The open letter says the admins of the said FB page share the sentiment of the former Ms. Universe towards the LGBTQ community and believe in working towards equal rights for those who are still fighting for such recognition.
‘Dear Ms. Gray
We have the highest respect for all our fellow human beings and believe in working towards equal rights for those who are still struggling for such recognition. LGBTQ are not the least of them.‘
However, the admins of Luminous, short for Luminous by Trixie Cruz-Angeles & Ahmed Paglinawan, reminds Ms Gray that, prior to any rally or march, with or without COVID, the state can regulate mass gatherings as per SC decision.
‘But allow us here at Luminous to remind you that, prior to any rally or march, COVID or no COVID, the state can regulate mass gatherings. Yes, it is in the form of getting a permit. The Supreme Court has said that while local governments or police cannot deny a group from staging a rally, they CAN REGULATE TIME AND PLACE.‘
Besides, Luminous argues that during a global health crisis, holding a rally puts the health of the public at risk, hence the regulation to protect public welfare.
‘A pandemic is not the best time to hold a rally. And we are aware that YOU are aware of the dangers of transmitting this disease, hence the regulation. And hence the dispersal and arrest, if any.’
On Ms. Gray’s insinuation that the purpose of the arrest was to deny LGBTQ their right to peaceful assembly? Luminous totally rejects this.
‘Is the arrest here for the purpose of denying LGBTQ their right to peaceful assembly? No. But it is for the purpose of enforcing regulations in a pandemic, for the public safety.’
And finally, on Miranda rights not read to the arrested rallyists, Luminous refuses to comment on that because according to Luminous, Ms. Gray’s statement does not give enough facts.
‘As for the Miranda rights, your statement doesn’t give us enough facts to comment on them, and will wait for a more opportune time to do so.’
‘In the meantime, we remain admirers of your achievements.’
