The Petro Gazz Angels narrowly avoided finishing in 10th place in the Premier Volleyball League Invitational, facing a formidable challenge from the Akari Power Chargers in their battle-for-ninth place game on Thursday.
Fortunately for the Angels, they managed to halt their slide in the fifth set and secure a 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, and 15-7 victory over the Power Chargers at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
According to Angels head coach Oliver Almadro, he reminded his players before the game not to underestimate the Power Chargers, despite the latter’s struggles in the mid-season conference.
“That’s what we reminded each other: let’s get this game. But you can’t count out Akari, which is a very talented team, well-coached, and well-prepared,” said Almadro.
“We became complacent. Good thing, naka-bwelo kami ng dalawa (2-0 set advantage), and we’re happy for the contributions of all the players, especially our veterans,” he added.
Gretchel Soltones led the Angels with 19 points, followed by Jonah Sabete with 15 points. Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Marian Buitre both contributed 10 points each.
Djanel Cheng anchored the team’s offense with 14 excellent sets and also scored seven points, earning her Player of the Game honors for the Angels.
