Ginebra sticks to defense to thwart TNT

Barangay Ginebra outshone TNT, 81-65, and stopped a two-game slide in the PBA On Tour on Friday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

It was Von Pessumal who rifled the booming three with 1:51 remaining, opening the door for the Kings to escape despite surrendering a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

Sidney Onwubere topped Ginebra with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Jeremiah Gray finished with a double-double of 18 points and eight rebounds.

Von Pessumal added 15 markers on three triples.

Ginebra improved to 5-5 while dealing the Tropang Giga’s eighth defeat in nine games.

“‘Yung last two losses namin, we were badly outrebounded, and we gave up too many points. We held TNT to 67 points, which is, I think, our best defensive game so far,” said lead assistant coach Richard Del Rosario in a report by Tiebreaker Times.

Del Rosario was relieved that the Kings were able to find a way despite playing without their bigs.

“‘Yun ‘yung satisfying: kahit wala kaming mga big guys, we were able to grind out the win,” he said.

Ginebra will try to close its preseason campaign with a win against NLEX on the tournament’s final day on June 30, also at the Ynares Sports Arena.
