Gilas Pilipinas’ Chot Reyes said he is stepping aside from his coaching duties to allow Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas to pick his replacement.
He made the announcement on Saturday following the nationals’ 96-75 thrashing of China in the classification phase of the FIBA World Cup. The victory capped a dismal campaign by the Filipinos in the tournament co-hosted by the Philippines.
“I think it is time for me to step aside,” said Reyes. “Through all the preparation time, I have always said judge us on our performance in the World Cup. Obviously, we did not perform, and as I said in the last game, I take full accountability.”
“I hate using the word resign because I am not a quitter.”
Prior to their emotional win against the Chinese, the Filipinos suffered four stinging losses from the start of the group stage and missed the fight for an automatic entry to the Paris Olympics.
“I signed up to do a job, and we did not deliver the result. I think it’s time to resign and allow the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) to make a decision.”
Filipino basketball fans made their feelings known towards Reyes by booing the coach in their last three games.
“It’s just been brutal; you’re on there. You’re part of it, right? It’s just brutal,” he told the media.
