Filipino-American head coach Erik Spoelstra was reportedly overjoyed upon hearing the news of Gilas Pilipinas’ gold medal finish in the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Associated Press writer Tim Reynolds shared on X (formerly Twitter) Spoelstra’s reaction when he learned about Gilas’ improbable feat in the Asiad.
“Spo learned during Heat practice this morning of the Philippines’ Asian Games gold medal. To say he’s pleased is a mild understatement,” Reynolds posted on Saturday.
The Philippines ended decades of misery in the Asian Games after trouncing Jordan 70-60 to bag the gold medal in men’s basketball.
Spoelstra is a good friend of Gilas head coach Tim Cone. Cone joined the Miami Heat’s Summer League team last year as an assistant coach.
