Jaycee Marcelino’s ‘Wala nang bukas’ mantra propels Zamboanga to Game 1 victory over Quezon

Jaycee Marcelino displayed his all-around game as Zamboanga Family Brand Sardines scored a 77-68 victory over Quezon Huskers in Game 1 of the 2023 MPBL Southern Division first round series on Saturday night at the STRIKE Gym in Bacoor, Cavite.

The reigning MPBL MVP awardee had a near triple-double performance of 20 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists as Zamboanga City took a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series.

According to Marcelino, he is extra motivated to win it all for Zamboanga City this season after falling short against the defending champions, the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards, during the 2022 MPBL season.

“Lagi kong sinasabi sa sarili ko na wala nang bukas para ‘yung energy ko mas lumabas pa, para mabigay ko ‘yung best ko sa laro,” Marcelino said during his Player of the Game interview.

Aside from Marcelino, Zamboanga City also got double-digit performances from Judel Ric Fuentes, who tallied 16 points with four three-pointers, and King Caralipio, who ended up with 13 markers.

Even with the 1-0 advantage in the series, Marcelino said Zamboanga City will try their best to finish off the Huskers in Game 2 of their series on October 14 in Zamboanga City.

“Kailangan na namin makuha ‘yung second game, kasi itong Quezon mahirap din na kalaban eh. Kailangan na i-take advantage namin na nasa homecourt namin (ang Game 2),” Marcelino said.
