RSA calls Gilas players heroes, congratulates MVP

San Miguel Corporation’s (SMC) Ramon S. Ang has extended his congratulations to the newly crowned Asian champion Gilas Pilipinas for its historic win in Hangzhou, China.

Ang, who intervened to help Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas with Gilas’ Asiad campaign, called coach Tim Cone and his crew heroes.

“No words can describe how grateful and proud we are of what you have accomplished, Gilas Pilipinas! Congratulations for bringing home the Asian Games gold!” Ang said in his social media post.

“Special thanks to our Barangay Ginebra coach, Tim Cone, for stepping up to the plate and bringing out the best in the team. You are all heroes. You have inspired our nation and showed us anything is possible.”

He also extended his congratulations to SBP and its chairman emeritus, Manny V. Pangilinan, for their role in allowing the SMC to work with Gilas.

“To the entire Gilas Pilipinas organization, partners, stakeholders, and the driving force behind all of this—Mr. Manny Pangilinan—maraming salamat po at mabuhay kayong lahat!”

The SMC group came to the rescue when SBP was in a bind after Gilas’ debacle in the FIBA World Cup, which led to the resignation of embattled coach Chot Reyes.

Upon Ang’s encouragement, Cone agreed to take over the coaching duties and received support from SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, who assumed the role of team manager.

The move worked wonders, as it helped Gilas go through the difficult part of preparations for the Asian Games.

In the end, the nationals won the first Asian Games basketball crown for the Philippines in six decades.
