Alvarez beats Scull by UD to retain undisputed super middleweight crown

Canelo Álvarez retained his undisputed super middleweight crown with a unanimous decision win over William Scull over the weekend at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The bout, which went the full 12 rounds, saw Álvarez put his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and The Ring titles on the line. Scull offered a tough challenge but failed to shake the Mexican legend’s composure.

Álvarez started slow and defensive, absorbing Scull’s early aggression, though the Cuban’s punches rarely landed cleanly, per Bleacher Report’s Paul Kasabian. By Round 6, Álvarez led narrowly on the cards, 58–56, thanks to timely counters and body work, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

A sluggish pace frustrated both the crowd and the referee, who urged action in the later rounds. Álvarez responded with targeted body shots in Round 9 but couldn’t break through Scull’s game plan.

Álvarez landed 56 of 152 punches, just one more than Scull’s 55 out of 293. Canelo focused more on the body, while Scull connected more to the head.

The 34-year-old Álvarez improved his record to 63-2-2, with his only losses coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol in 2022. Saturday marked his sixth straight win—all by unanimous decision—since the Bivol loss.

Scull, who put up his UBF super middleweight belt, now drops to 21-1. The 32-year-old Cuban had won the vacant title by beating Vladimir Shishkin last October.

Álvarez entered the bout a heavy -3500 favorite per DraftKings. With the victory secured, he now sets his sights on a potential September superfight against Terence Crawford.
