Quendy Fernandez of Team Philippines-E amassed five gold and two silver medals in the swimming events of the 2024 BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex in Puerto Princesa.
Philip Adrian Sahagun of Team Philippines-A matched her feat, also winning five gold medals in the men’s division.
The 19-year-old Fernandez, a UAAP Season 87 champion, described her achievement as a dream come true.
“This is an international competition, so at the beginning I was nervous because my parents and supporters were watching… But them cheering me is like energy that made me stronger,” said the second-year Electrical Engineering student at the University of the Philippines—Diliman.
Aside from the BIMP-EAGA, the native of Puerto Princesa City has also won six golds and won four, including two new records in the UAAP Season 87 held at the Clark Aquatic Center in Angeles City.
“I was prepared for this competition. After the UAAP season 87 in Clark, Angeles City last month, I did not rest anymore because this BIMP-EAGA is an international competition. But I was not expecting to win this many medals,” said Fernandez.
Sahagun, a third-year BS Entrepreneurship student at DLSU-Taft, also came out triumphant with five gold medals in the five events he participated in.
“I’m 5-of-5. I never expected this because after UAAP season 87, I took a break. And you know I’m also a late bloomer. Because I started swimming late, I encouraged myself that I could do it. After my first event, I saw that I had a big chance, so my confidence grew stronger,” said Sahagun, who also wants to be included in the national team.
Fernandez won the girls 50-m backstroke (30.22 sec), girls 100-m backstroke (1:07.21), girls 200-m 4×50-m medley relay (2:06.68), girls 200-freestyle 4×50-m freestyle relay (1:55.76), and girls 200-m backstroke (2:27.62).
She led team E to silver medal finishes in the 4×100-m freestyle relay (4:20.08) and girls 4×100-m medley relay (4:48.78).
Sahagun won the boys 200m individual medley (2:13.52), boys 4x100m freestyle relay (3:44.05), boys 100m backstroke (1:00.82), boys 200m backstroke (2:14.38), and 4x100m medley relay (4:06.66).
