Francis Lopez displays ‘shush’ gesture as UP gets back at Ateneo

Gerry Abadiano led the way with 22 points as the UP Fighting Maroons secured a 65-60 revenge victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday in the UAAP Season 86 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

UP held a 12-point lead, 54-42, in the fourth period, but the Eagles, with the efforts of Jared Brown and Kai Ballungay, managed to tie the game at 54-54.

Abadiano and Harold Alarcon stepped up for UP, making crucial baskets to extend the Maroons’ lead to six points, 60-54, with just 42.9 seconds left on the clock.

Ateneo made a last-gasp comeback attempt, with Mason Amos hitting a three-pointer to reduce the lead to three, 63-60. However, Joseph Obasa missed a point-blank shot in their subsequent offensive play, allowing UP to secure the victory.

Meanwhile, a video posted on Puso Pilipinas’ Facebook page showed Francis Lopez making the ‘shush’ gesture after the final buzzer.

In their first encounter of the season, UP’s CJ Cansino also made the gesture in the third period, which drew criticism from social media users.

To make matters worse, UP lost to Ateneo in their first encounter.

This time, the Maroons made sure to avenge their first loss of the season, improving their league-best record to 8-1 while handing the Eagles their fifth loss in nine games.

Lopez and Alarcon contributed 10 points each for UP, and Malick Diouf had an impressive performance with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

On the other hand, Brown was the top scorer for Ateneo with 18 points. (MJD)
