Orlan Wamar Jr. hits dagger trey as San Juan eliminates Makati

Orlan Wamar Jr. delivered a dagger triple in the second overtime as the San Juan Knights-Go for Gold ousted the Makati OK Bet Kings, 95-92, in Game 2 of the MPBL Northern Division quarterfinals on late Monday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Holding to a slim 92-90 lead after two free throws from Kings’ JC Cullar, Wamar converted a long three-pointer to surge the Knights on top at 95-90 with just a minute left in the second extension.

Makati still managed to cut the deficit to 92-95 after two free throws from Emman Calo and still had an opportunity to force a third extension, but Rhinwill Yambing missed on his three-point try.

Wamar finished the game with 16 points, including four three-point conversions, to go with seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals as No. 6 seed San Juan completed their upset over No. 3 ranked Makati, 2-0.

“Nag take charge lang ako nung dulo. Malaki rin ang tiwala nila sa akin ni (Knights head) coach Randy (Alcantara). Mabuti at pumasok ‘yung huling tira,” said Wamar in a post-game interview.

Adrian Nocum led the way for the Knights with 22 points and nine rebounds; Michael Calisaan added 14 markers; and Marwin Taywan, Nikko Panganiban, and Zachary Huang had 13, 11, and 10 markers, respectively.

Robby Celiz led the Kings with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Calo also ended up with 24 markers, while Billy Ray Robles chipped in with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The San Juan Knights will face the defending champion Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards in the best-of-three Northern Division semifinals round.
