Quinito Henson reveals untold story from Gilas’ World Cup journey

Sports columnist Quinito Henson delivered a revelation about Justin Brownlee’s rumored involvement in the FIBA World Cup.

In an interview with Noli Eala on the Power and Play show, Henson disclosed that Brownlee was prepared to support Gilas in the World Cup had it not been for his foot injury.

“He (Brownlee) was supposed to play in the FIBA World Cup,” Henson said. “Because of his injury, napasok si Jordan Clarkson.”

When Eala asked for clarification, Henson doubled down on his statement.

“So, ibig mo sabihin, lalaro si Brownlee instead na si Clarkson? ‘Yun ang mangyayari dapat?”Eala replied.

“That’s right, that’s right. ‘Yan ang pasya ng SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas), ‘yan din ang pasya ng head coach (Chot Reyes), and the management of Gilas,” Henson responded. “Justin Brownlee was supposed to play for the Philippines, pero ‘yung nangyari he had bone spurs in his foot, he had to undergo arthroscopic surgery—three places sa kanyang paa. They (doctors) were able to extract those bone spurs. So, hindi siya nakalaro, Jordan Clarkson came in.”

Clarkson came in weeks before the World Cup and helped the Gilas finish the tourney with a 1-4 record.

On the other hand, former national team head coach Chot Reyes said in June that Clarkson was their first choice for Gilas’ naturalized player in the World Cup. (MJD)
