UAAP slap 3-week suspension on 3 erring referees

The UAAP has suspended three referees who were part of the officiating crew during three of the four UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament matches last Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Referees Allan Dasal, Allan Baria, and Dennis Escaros were slapped with a three-week suspension for their officiating errors, based on a memorandum signed by commissioner Xavier Nunag and deputy commissioner Mariana Lopa.

Dasal was one of the three referees for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons-Far Eastern University Tamaraws game; Baria officiated the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles-University of the East Red Warriors match; and Escaros refereed the De La Salle University Green Archers-Adamson University Falcons game.

During those games, the Fighting Maroons prevailed over the Tamaraws, 80-76, in overtime, while the Blue Eagles edged the Red Warriors, 76-69, and the Green Archers dominated the Falcons, 71-58.

According to the memo, the three referees’ behavior, demeanor, and actions, particularly their failure to enforce the rules of the game, were in violation of the standards of conduct expected of referees and were disruptive to the integrity of the game.

It added that Dasal, Baria, and Escaros all failed in the referee game report card, which is a number-based evaluation of every UAAP basketball game the referee officiates.

Among the most contested of the three games were against the Blue Eagles and the Red Warriors, where Ateneo was awarded 32 free throws while UE was only given four the entire game.

“We take the responsibility of providing competent and professional referees to the league very seriously, and it is essential that all officials maintain the highest level of integrity and accuracy,” the UAAP said.

“The suspension is intended to give the referees the opportunity to reflect on their actions and to improve their performance. This suspension also means that the referees mentioned will not be officiating during the playoffs, final four, and final games,” it added.

Officiating has been put in the spotlight in several matches in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament, particularly during the Blue Eagles-Falcons game where Ateneo’s Sean Quitevis was not called for a foul on a clear hack on Adamson’s Matt Montebon with three seconds in the game.

Also, the referees during the Fighting Maroons-National University Bulldogs game opted to give a lighter penalty to UP center Maodo Malick Diouf for his close fist punch on NU’s Mark Padrones.
