UP remains unbeaten with 3-0 UAAP start, defeats NU

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons maintained their unbeaten record in UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball after a 78-60 triumph over the National University Bulldogs on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rookie Francis Lopez led the way with a career-high 14 points as the Fighting Maroons surged to solo first place in the standings with a perfect 3-0 win-loss slate.

Maodo Malick Diouf added double-double 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Crispin John Cansino and Harold Alarcon ended with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Fighting Maroons.

Trailing by as much as nine points early in the first half, the Fighting Maroons turned things around in the second period behind Gerry Abadiano and Ernest Felicilda to take a 30-25 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs kept it close early in the third period as they took a slim 35-34 lead, but Alarcon anchored the Fighting Maroons’ breakaway as they established an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Jake Figueroa tallied double-doubles of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Omar John and PJ Palacielo added 11 and 10 markers, respectively, as the Bulldogs dropped to 2-1.
