King Gurtiza shines as EAC takes down Arellano

King Gurtiza continued his resurgence as he led the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals to a 77-64 victory over the Arellano University Chiefs in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan.

The veteran gunner top-scored for the Generals with 23 points to go with six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block as they kept their Final Four hopes alive with their 8-7 win-loss slate.

Generals head coach Jerson Cabiltes expressed happiness that Gurtiza, as well as Ralph Robin, did not waste the second chance given to them after the previous EAC coach removed them last season.

“Ang palagi ko lang sinasabi sa kanila is to not waste the opportunity given to them, and I am happy naman that they are responding with decent performances,” Cabiltes said.

Cabiltes added that he is also glad that the Generals have fully adapted to the system he has put in place, as they are now in the running for the Final Four, unlike in the previous seasons.

“I am thankful to the players na nag-adapt sila sa system ko. Maganda naman at madaming nagste-step up,” Cabiltes said. “Hindi rin naman kasi pwede na mag-rely lang kami sa starters.”

“Ang sabi ko sa kanila na, if we want to enter the Final Four, we have to win our remaining games. Hindi muna namin iniisip ‘yung (standings) ng ibang teams, we have to take care of our games,” he added.

“For our remaining games, ibibigay namin all out kasi hindi rin madadali ang mga makakalaban namin. We will give our best para magkaroon kami ng chance sa Final Four,” he further said.

On the part of the Chiefs, they have dropped to a 2-12 win-loss record with the loss.
