Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Head Coach Kim Sang-sik expressed displeasure with Goyang Sono Skygunners’ import Chinanu Onuaku for his unsportsmanlike action that resulted in the injury of Red Boosters forward Rhenz Abando.
Kim expressed his regret over the unfortunate injury to the former Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights star, highlighting Abando’s significance as a valuable member of the Red Boosters team and Gilas Pilipinas.
Kim added that, given Abando’s fractures to his 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae, along with a sprained wrist and a concussion, he won’t be able to defend his KBL Slam Dunk title and will miss some crucial games in both the KBL and East Asian Super League.
“Abando is a member of our team and also a member of the Philippine national team. It makes no sense for him to injure his spine just from competing for a rebound with Onuaku,” Kim said in an interview with Jumpball.
“I am so upset that it has come to a point where he is in the general hospital. If he takes a break for 4 weeks, he will not be able to participate in the All-Star Game Dunk Contest or play in the EASL,” he added.
Abando, the Asian Quota Player of the Red Boosters, suffered the unfortunate injury when Onuaku pushed him from behind while he was mid-air, leading to the collision.
His absence is a notable setback for the defending champions, the Red Boosters, who are struggling to find their rhythm this season and currently hold the seventh spot in the standings with a 10-16 win-loss record.
In the games he played for the Red Boosters this season, Abando maintained an average of 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game.
