TNT has no plans to retire Asi Taulava’s jersey, says Jojo Lastimosa

TNT Tropang Giga head coach Jojo Lastimosa stated that the franchise has no intention of retiring Asi Taulava’s jersey number 88.

“No plans,” Lastimosa told Spin.ph when asked if they would retire Taulava’s jersey number.

The Fil-Tongan center played the first eight seasons of his PBA career with the Mobiline/Talk ‘N Text franchise. He averaged a double-double throughout his stint with TNT. Taulava also helped the team win the 2003 All-Filipino title, the same year when he won his lone season MVP award.

TNT traded Taulava to the now-defunct Coca-Cola Tigers in the middle of the 2007-2008 season in exchange for Ali Peek and the rights to a future first-round pick, which TNT used to select Jared Dillinger.

On the other hand, TNT’s sister team, NLEX, will be the ball club that honors Taulava with a jersey retirement ceremony on Wednesday. The 6’9 behemoth has been with the Road Warriors since 2014.

Coincidentally, Taulava’s jersey retirement ceremony will be conducted during the halftime break of NLEX’s match-up against the Tropang Giga.

In TNT’s franchise history, only the jersey numbers of Jimmy Alapag and Harvey Carey were retired. (MJD)
