The University of the Visayas Baby Lancers surprised the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 62-54, in Game 1 of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) high school basketball finals on Monday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Roderick Cambarijan Jr. and Ismael Kim Culdora delivered the goods for the Baby Lancers in the fourth quarter as they moved a win closer to unseating the Magis Eagles.
Cambarijan top-scored with 23 points to go with seven rebounds, four steals, and one assist, while Culdora posted a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Baby Lancers.
The Ronald Bucao-led Baby Lancers can capture their first CESAFI high school basketball championship in Game 2 on Wednesday night.
The Baby Lancers were ahead 53-44 in the fourth quarter until the Magis Eagles relied on back-to-back three-pointers by graduating guard Jared Bahay to cut the deficit to 50-53.
UV, however, responded with a short jumper from Culdora and five straight points from Cambarijan as the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu established a 60-50 lead with over a minute left.
Bahay, who is set to join the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the next UAAP men’s basketball tournament, top-scored with nine points for the Magis Eagles under head coach Rommel Rasmo.
