Magnolia secured an 88-80 Game 3 triumph over San Miguel Beer, marking a breakthrough in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-seven finals on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Mark Barroca delivered a stellar performance, scoring 20 points throughout the game, securing Magnolia’s first win in the best-of-seven finals series.
Even with import Tyler Bey in a supporting role, Magnolia effectively contained San Miguel Beer’s outside shooting.
The Hotshots also effectively limited the Beermen’s import, Bennie Boatwright, in the first two quarters, reaping rewards for Coach Chito Victolero’s strategy.
Magnolia held San Miguel to just 15 points in the first quarter, then hiked the lead to as much as 13 points.
But the Beermen fought their way back into the game and managed to cut the deficit to 63-60 at the onset of the fourth period.
Alex Dionisio and Paul Lee then rifled successive threes that jacked the Hotshots’ lead to 78-64 midway through the payoff period.
Magnolia has not looked back since.
San Miguel won Games 1 and 2 before yielding to Magnolia.
