MPBL remains ‘consistent’ in banning players, game officials involved in ‘game-fixing’

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) recently imposed severe sanctions on players and game officials accused of involvement in “game-fixing.”

The league announced on Tuesday that it has banned 47 players and game officials allegedly involved in game-fixing during the 2023 MPBL season.

However, the league chose not to disclose the names of the banned individuals.

“The league naman has been consistent when it comes to punishing those involved in game-fixing. Yearly naman may pinaparusahan tayo,” a MPBL official told Fastbreak on condition of anonymity on early Wednesday.

“We always listen sa mga complaints ng mga team owners and fans because we really wanted to improve the league because ang ganda ng mission ng liga pero nasisira dahil sa ganyang issue,” he added.

One team owner in the league welcomed MPBL’s decision, having faced similar game-fixing issues with his players last season.

“This is really a welcome move. Sa team ko naging problema ko din ‘yang game-fixing na ‘yan,” said one of the 29 team owners who opted not to be named. “I had to release at least half of my players midseason last year because nahuli namin na involved in game-fixing.”

“Actually, isa ako sa mga active na nakikipag communicate sa MPBL about sa mga game-fixing, especially sa mga referees, kaya I really welcome this move by the league,” he added.

The team owner acknowledged that eradicating game-fixing in the MPBL will take time but expressed hope for progress in the upcoming season.

“Game-fixing, hindi basta-basta maalis ‘yan, it will really take time, but I am hoping that there will be improvement in the upcoming season, kasi talagang parang lason ‘yan na sumisira sa liga,” the team owner further said.
