SMB coach: Fajardo declines rest despite injured calf

Despite any strain, nothing could deter San Miguel superstar June Mar Fajardo from participating in Game 5.

Fajardo’s determination paid off as the Beermen secured a 108-98 victory over Magnolia in Game 5, taking a 3-2 series lead.

Notwithstanding sustaining a calf strain in the previous game, Fajardo made a substantial contribution with 18 points and 15 rebounds, providing vital defensive support for San Miguel in the shaded lane.

“That’s June Mar to you,” said coach Jorge Gallent following the win. “He will do everything to help his team, and that’s what he did.”

The Kraken decided to suit up against the advice of his doctors.

“He got a strain in our last game, and he went to therapy. He told me he’s not gonna rest today. Even if his doctors said no,” said Gallent.

Prior to the game, Fajardo said he treated the doctor’s advice as it was: advice.

“Advice lang. Basta kailangan akong maglaro,” Fajardo said in Spin.ph. “Gusto ko ring maglaro.”

Game 5 was surely crucial for San Miguel, as they came into the match with a 2-all series tie against Magnolia. A loss will put them at a 2-3 series disadvantage, and Fajardo did not want that.

“Kailangan namin mag-bounce back, kailangan naming manalo. Sayang yung opportunity.”
