Jaime Malonzo, overcoming recent controversy, delivered a stellar performance with a career-high 32 points to lead Barangay Ginebra to victory against Rain or Shine on Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Despite his absence in the Gilas Pilipinas game against Chinese Taipei due to a previous altercation, Malonzo showcased his versatility by sinking five three-pointers alongside eight rebounds and four blocks in the game against Rain or Shine.
“It’s definitely been tough; it’s been a while for me. Just credit to my team. They had my back, and it’s just been tough. It hasn’t been easy. I’m just happy to go out there tonight,” said Malonzo, who was still sporting a black eye.
Coach Tim Cone, without delving into details, mentioned that Malonzo has moved on from the incident, highlighting the comfort he has found with his Ginebra teammates.
“He found a sanctuary in practice; he found his comfort zone with his teammates. That’s the key for him. We put everything behind and move forward,” said the concurrent Gilas tactician.
“We’re really proud of him and what he did and how he came back in practice.”
Pressed for further details about the incident, Cone chose to protect his player and refrained from providing additional answers.
“I don’t think this is the platform to ask questions about what’s happened. This is about basketball; we should be talking about the game. I want him to get back to the locker room,” said the coach.
Maverick Ahanmisi had an outstanding performance on Friday, contributing 18 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
Unfortunately, Scottie Thompson was absent due to an injury.
Rain or Shine, led by Antion Asistio’s 21 points, suffered its third consecutive loss.
